The construction site health and safety coordinator (CoSS) is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of prevention and OHS compliance on the construction site. They make sure the work is carried out in accordance with laws, regulations, safety standards and the company’s prevention program, while protecting workers and maintaining a zero-incident culture.
Duties:
- Plan and coordinate daily prevention activities on the site;
- Inspect the site and ensure that workers and subcontractors rigorously apply health and safety standards;
- Monitor OHS compliance on the site in accordance with the prevention plans and identify potential risks and issues;
- Implement and enforce occupational health and safety procedures (regulatory frameworks, CNESST, internal rules);
- Deliver safety orientations to new workers, manage the required work permits (work at heights, confined spaces, etc.) and the site’s protective equipment;
- Maintain a safe, clean work environment that meets OHS requirements;
- Complete daily inspection reports, safety audits and incident or near-miss reports;
- Work closely with the project management team, the superintendent and the site supervisors;
- Take part in site meetings, lead safety talks (toolbox talks) and OHS coordination meetings;
- Handle emergencies, lead incident investigations and manage unforeseen safety issues in the field.
Required skills:
- Solid experience in health and safety coordination and prevention on construction sites;
- In-depth knowledge of construction methods, OHS regulations (Safety Code for the construction industry, Act respecting occupational health and safety) and protective equipment;
- Valid CoSS attestation / certification and ASP Construction card;
- Ability to raise awareness, supervise and guide work crews and to solve safety-related problems;
- Excellent communication, diplomacy and interpersonal skills;
- Command of the occupational health and safety standards that apply in Quebec;
- Ability to work under pressure and to react quickly to dangerous situations;
- Proficiency with computer tools and OHS management or tracking software (an asset).
